Abstract

The purpose of this study is to observe the histopathologic changes on oral epithelium and mast cell distribution produced in developing rat fetus following intravenous injection of the 5-fluorouracil to the maternal body.
For this study, 22 female albino rats, weighing 200g or more, were used and divided into 2 groups experimental animal group ; 20 rats, and control animal group : 2 rats.
After gestation of all rats, the experimental animal group were intravenously, injected with 5- fluorouracil at a dose of 5^(§¶)/(§¸) body weight on the 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th, day after gestation respectively.
All the fetus rats, control and experimental animal weres acrified on 21 day after gestation just before delivery.
All the specimens were fixed in 100% normal formalin solution embedded in paraffin,
secti(- red and all the samples were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, toluidine blue stain in each.
Following results were obtained
1. In all experimental group, it appeared that atrophic basal cells with pyknotic nuclei, decreased keratinization, and increased vacuolization in stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, in each injection group.
2. In experimental group, mast cell number and distribution in oral mucosa was significantly decreased on each injection group and markedly diminished on 9th day injection after gestation.
3. In all experimental group, body weights of feti are markedly diminished compared with control group.
